INSTITUTE FOR AFRICAN ALTERNATIVES (IFAA)

NAME
The name of the organization is Institute for African Alternatives (IFAA)

STATUS
IFAA is registered Registrar of Companies and Close Corporations registration number 1992/002072/08 and is a non-profit organization. It is an independent organization without any affiliations. No member shall be liable for any obligations and liabilities of IFAA by virtue of their status as a member of office bearer of IFAA.

AIMS
IFAA is committed to promoting sustainable development to overcome the inherited political, economic, and social distortions from colonialism in South Africa and the continent as a whole.

OBJECTIVES
IFAA produces a quarterly journal SA Journal of Social and Economic Policy which contains analytical articles on South Africa, Africa and international affairs in order to create better awareness of problems and solutions proposed by experts.

IFAA intervenes through its publications in relevant public affairs to influence decision makers and the general public.

IFAA conducts in-depth research on economic matters on behalf of official South African and African institutions in order to assist with economic development.

IFAA has a student and youth department which produces relevant articles and holds regular fora for discussion of critical political, economic and social issues and which promote intellectual understanding among students and youth.

GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE
IFAA has a Board of recognized personalities from academia and other public organisations which is the ultimate authority of the institute. The Board serves as the governing body of the Institute and as the Editorial Board of New Agenda. The term of service on the Board is 2 years as from November 2017. New members may be co-opted as deemed necessary.

The minimum number of Board members is 5 persons. A quorum for meetings of the Board is a minimum of 3 members. There is a Director and Deputy Director and research and other staff. The Director has day to day management responsibility for all activities in the organization including recruitment of staff and disciplinary matters. IFAA has no separate membership outside of the Board. There is an Advisory Committee for New Agenda.

FINANCE
Finances are derived from research reports for various institutions, advertising sales in New Agenda, by sales of IFAA books, from grants by sympathetic organisations and other sources. Accounts are audited by a recognized firm and which are scrutinized by the Board. The Director is responsible for all financial transactions in the first instance and shall report appropriately to the Board.The Director is responsible for all IFAA bank accounts, receipts and payments.

DISSOLUTION OF IFAA
Should IFAA become dysfunctional for any reason, or should the Board so decide, the organisation shall be wound up by the Board after settling any debts and any remaining assets passed on to any similar organization.

GENERAL
Where not explicitly specified the Board shall observe the normal rules and procedures of public organisations.
